THE BEGINNING
About five years ago I read “Start with Why” by Simon Sinek. It was LIFE CHANGING. Listen to him speak in this TED Talk on YouTube, and it will motive you to read his whole book.
I firmly believe that EVERYONE has a Purpose on this earth; a reason WHY we were created and exist. When you figure out your Why, you begin to live your life with Passion and Purpose.
THE JOURNEY
I didn’t figure out my Why overnight. It’s been a long process. I used to think my Why was wrapped up in my children; but it’s not. Two of my three have left the home, and it has reminded me that they can be my What, but not my Why.
SIMON SINEK
Let me step back for a moment, and talk a bit more about Simon Sinek. Once upon a time, Simon Sinek analyzed leaders, and discovered that the best leaders and organizations think, act and communicate in a specific way. He describes it utilizing The Golden Circle.
Most of us operate from the outside in. We tell people What we do (work here, go to school there), and maybe How. Influencers Start with Why, and then that translates into a specific How and What.
What is Simon Sinek’s Why?
“My WHY is to inspire people to do what inspires them
so that, together, we can
change our world for the better.”
DISCOVERING MY WHY
As I looked over my life, I noticed a consistent focus on wanting my children to be functional adults who would positively affect their world. So far I believe I’m two for two; my daughters are incredibly independent and competent young ladies who are pursuing their dreams. I also have a special-needs son, and I have had to advocate on his behalf. I became a teacher so that I my schedule could match his. And one day, I finally made ME a priority, and allowed myself to break free of a 9-year abusive marriage. All of this led me to discovering MY Why:
Teaching people of all ages the tools they need
to become productive, emotionally-functional adults
who will change their world for the better.
Now go, read this book, and discover your Why.
